Livistona drudei, the Halifax fan palm, is a solitary palm native to a restricted area of coastal northeastern Queensland. Its smooth trunk and crown of finely divided, drooping fan leaves give it an airy outline, while mature fruit turns purple-black.
## Site and scale
This is a large landscape palm rather than a small garden accent. Project Palm reports it can reach 28 m and notes that it remains uncommon in cultivation; its profile describes a tall, slender trunk and cream-colored, funnel-shaped flowers. The Queensland Government records this palm in its regional ecosystem database for coastal northeastern Queensland, including one ecosystem noted as habitat for the species.
## Growing conditions
For cultivation, Project Palm recommends full sun, well-drained soil and regular watering, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. It also reports some drought tolerance once established. Give the eventual crown and trunk generous room, and consider the armed leaf stalks when choosing a spot beside paths or gathering areas.
## Maintenance
Remove only dead foliage with appropriate palm-pruning care; avoid injury to the growing point. [Project Palm species profile](https://projectpalm.net/species/livistona-drudei) · [Queensland regional ecosystem record](https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/regional-ecosystems/details/?re=8.2.13)
