Carnarvon Gorge fan palm (Livistona nitida) is a tall, solitary fan palm native to southeastern Queensland. Its upright trunk and rounded crown of glossy, divided leaves create a strong vertical feature for parks and spacious gardens.
## Appearance and placement
Published mature-size estimates differ by growing region: the Monaco natural-history account reports 20–30 m, while the Palmeras y Jardines catalogue, whose height categories describe cultivation in southwestern Europe, places it below 15 m there. The palm has large leaves and long, armed petioles. Cream to yellow flowers rise among the leaves, followed by glossy black fruit. Leave clear space around the crown and avoid placing it beside busy paths where the sharp petiole spines could catch passersby.
## Growing conditions
In its native range, this species grows near streams on sandy or stony soils. It performs best in full sun, with well-drained soil; young palms may appreciate slight shade. Established plants can tolerate short dry periods, though regular irrigation helps during prolonged hot, rainless weather. Avoid persistently wet, poorly drained ground.
## Maintenance
Use palm-safe pruning and remove only dead or damaged leaves; do not cut into the terminal growing point.
