Sweet alyssum is a low, spreading annual or short-lived perennial with dense, fragrant flower clusters. Its mat-forming growth suits edging, gaps between walkway stones, and filler planting around taller plants; it grows in full sun to partial shade and needs well-drained soil. ## Seasonal display
The species typically bears small white flowers; named cultivars expand the palette to pink, rose, lavender, purple, and apricot, so color varies among selections. Flowering can continue from spring toward first frost in cool summers, while summer heat may reduce bloom.
## Growing conditions
Choose a sunny to partly shaded site with well-drained soil. North Carolina Extension lists mature plants at 3–10 inches tall and 6–12 inches wide, with USDA zones 5a–9b; the [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/124133/lobularia-maritima/details) also describes a compact, low-growing plant and well-drained soil.
## Maintenance
Clip plants back when flowering declines to encourage another flush. Sweet alyssum can self-sow; leaving plants through winter and clearing old growth in spring can expose seedlings.
