About Yolo Top Purple Sweet Alyssum

YOLO® Top Purple is a named purple-flowered sweet alyssum in the YOLO series. First Step Greenhouses lists this exact selection; sweet alyssum generally grows as a low, spreading mound that works well along bed edges and in containers. ## Garden Use Set this compact annual near a path, at the front of a border, or in a container where its purple flowers can soften the edge. NC State Extension describes sweet alyssum as an edging and filler plant, including use between taller plants and walkway stones. Allow room for the mound to spread without covering smaller neighbors. ## Growing Conditions Sweet alyssum grows in full sun or partial shade and needs well-drained soil. In cooler weather it can flower from spring toward first frost, while hot summer conditions may reduce blooming. These are species-level recommendations; local heat and moisture affect performance. ## Maintenance Water newly planted alyssum regularly until established, then check soil before watering. Containers dry more quickly than garden beds, so monitor them during warm or windy weather. If flowering slows in summer, trim the mound lightly and watch for renewed growth when conditions cool. Remove volunteer seedlings where they are unwanted, and avoid persistently wet soil.
