About Spiny-head Mat-rush

Spiny-head mat-rush is a clumping Australian grass-like perennial with firm, strap-shaped leaves and small cream flower clusters in spring and summer. It makes a dense accent or mass planting for borders, open landscapes, verges, and erosion-prone slopes. The South Australian Botanic Gardens profile gives a mature range of 0.5–1 metre tall and 0.8–1 metre wide. [Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium plant profile](https://plantselector.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au/Plants/Details/2768) ## Garden use Plant it in a sunny or partly shaded position, as a repeated mass or among shrubs and other strap-leaved plants. The foliage forms an upright clump, while the flowers offer nectar and can attract birds and butterflies. It tolerates drought and moderate frost, and established plants need little supplementary water. ## Growing conditions Provide well-drained soil; the species tolerates clay, loam, or sand. Allow room for the clump to widen and avoid placing it where sharp leaf tips will brush a narrow path. The official profile recommends minimal supplementary watering. ## Maintenance Water regularly during the first growing season, then reduce watering once roots are established. Remove damaged leaves at the base and clear old foliage when needed to keep the clump tidy.
