‘Major Wheeler’ is a vigorous twining honeysuckle whose bright red tubular flowers are especially profuse and continue from spring into summer. Train its stems over a strong trellis, arbor, or fence to create a vertical screen and bring hummingbirds close to the garden.
## Flowers and Form
The selection is valued for its long, heavy flowering display. Illinois Extension reports flowering from May through summer and notes that pruning just after bloom can encourage later flowering. Its climbing stems need a support they can wrap around; the mature form is about 8–15 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide.
## Growing Conditions
Give it full sun for the best flowering, though partial shade is tolerated. Choose a location with enough room for a fast-growing vine and a support built to carry it. The tubular flowers provide nectar for visiting hummingbirds. Red berries may follow the flowers; keep them ornamental and do not eat them.
## Maintenance
After the main flowering flush, prune lightly to shape the vine and encourage new blooming stems. Remove tangled or damaged growth and secure new shoots to their support.
