Chilean Myrtle

Chilean Myrtle (Luma apiculata) is an evergreen tree or large shrub with aromatic leaves and cinnamon-colored bark that flakes to reveal lighter patches. It bears white summer flowers and purple berries, and is also known as Arrayán, Temu, and Palo Colorado. RHS gives mature height of 8–12 m and spread wider than 8 m. Chilean populations vary across the species’ broad range, and the University of Talca describes a smaller local tree form. ## Maintenance RHS places this species in pruning group 1: it needs little or no pruning, and hard pruning can spoil its natural branching.
