About Luminary® Backlight Tall Garden Phlox

Luminary® ‘Backlight’ is a compact tall garden phlox with pure white, fragrant flower panicles above dark green foliage. Its mildew-resistant leaves and 28–30 inch flowering height make it useful in sunny borders and smaller perennial groupings. [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=PHLBA) and [Proven Winners](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/phlox/luminary-backlight-tall-garden-phlox-phlox-paniculata) identify the selection as Phlox paniculata ‘Backlight’ and report a 20–24 inch spread and USDA zones 3–8. ## Garden Use Plant it in a border, cottage garden, or pollinator planting where the white panicles can brighten summer and early fall. The upright clump pairs well with ornamental grasses and purple or blue perennials. Its compact size also suits a large container, provided the soil remains evenly moist. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun to part shade and fertile, well-drained soil that holds steady moisture. Give the plant space for air circulation; avoid overhead watering when possible because phlox foliage can develop powdery mildew. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds visit the fragrant flowers. ## Maintenance Water during dry periods and remove damaged stems as needed. Deadhead spent panicles to prolong the display and reduce self-seeding. Cut back old stems after flowering or in late winter before new growth begins, and divide established clumps if they become crowded. The breeder describes ‘Backlight’ as mildew resistant, though good spacing still supports healthy foliage.
