Staircase™ is a Green Fuse lupine series bred for compact, heavily branched plants with multiple flower spikes opening together. The series includes several named color forms, while flowering and performance vary with climate and growing conditions.
## Flowers and garden use
Green Fuse describes a tiered floral display with an extended show and lists Staircase among its First Light® Perennials. Its grower catalog notes that the series can flower in its first year without vernalization and is suitable for containers. Lupines generally bloom from spring into summer, and their upright flower spikes make a clear accent in mixed borders or large pots.
## Growing conditions
Provide full sun in cooler locations and light afternoon shade where summers are hot. Lupines grow best in organically rich soil with steady moisture; keep the soil moist but well drained. Mulch helps keep roots cool. In hot, humid climates, many lupines are short-lived and may perform better as annuals.
## Maintenance
Remove spent flower spikes to encourage additional bloom, and watch for aphids, slugs, and snails. Lupines may live only a few years even in favorable settings, so plan for occasional replacement or reseeding.
