Create design onlineAbout Staircase® Pink Grapefruit - Lupinus
Staircase® Pink Grapefruit is a lupine selection with upright flower spikes in vibrant yellow and pink. Green Fuse lists it among the distinct color forms in its Staircase series; a perennial grower catalog describes the series at 28–36 inches, hardy in USDA Zones 4–8, and flowering in spring and summer. Its vertical flower spires suit the middle or back of a sunny border, where the colorful display can rise above lower perennials. ## Growing Conditions
Choose an open, sunny position with well-drained soil. Lupines flower best in full sun, and the [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/lupins/growing-guide) recommends regular water during establishment and hot, dry spells. The RHS notes that established border lupins usually need little supplemental water except during severe drought; container plants dry faster and need more frequent checks.
## Seasonal Display
The Staircase series is described for spring and summer flowering, while the Pink Grapefruit selection combines pink and yellow tones. Pair it with plants that have contrasting foliage or simpler flower forms so its upright spikes remain easy to see.
## Maintenance
Deadhead faded flower spikes to prolong the display. The RHS advises wearing gloves when handling lupines because all parts are poisonous.
