Staircase® Purple is a named lupine form with rich purple flower spikes highlighted by a little white. Green Fuse lists Purple as a distinct color choice in its Staircase series; a perennial grower catalog gives the series a 28–36-inch height, Zones 4–8 hardiness and spring-to-summer flowering. Its upright spires add vertical color in a sunny perennial border, with palmate green foliage beneath the flowers. ## Growing Conditions
Site lupines in an open, sunny position and soil that drains well. The [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/lupins/growing-guide) recommends watering regularly during establishment and hot, dry spells; established border plants usually need little extra water except in severe drought. In cold, wet areas, protect roots from prolonged winter moisture, especially in containers.
## Seasonal Display
The Purple color form is listed with a slight white highlight, so it brings a soft contrast through the spring and summer flowering season. Combine it with grasses or broad-leaved perennials to vary the border’s texture without competing with its flower spikes.
## Maintenance
Deadhead faded flower spikes to prolong the display. All parts of lupines are poisonous, so wear gloves when handling them, as the RHS advises.
