Create design onlineAbout WESTCOUNTRY™ 'Beefeater' Red Lupine
Beefeater is an upright Westcountry™ lupine with red flower spikes above divided green leaves. Proven Winners reports a garden height of 24–36 inches and a 24-inch spread; Must Have Perennials lists a 25–30-inch spread for the selection, so allow roughly two to two-and-a-half feet of room.
## Flowers and placement
The long, densely packed spikes bloom in spring and early summer and make a strong vertical accent in borders, mass plantings, and cut-flower gardens. The official profile lists the plant for USDA Zones 4–9, full sun to part shade, and consistent moisture with good drainage. It also reports visits from bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, with reduced browsing by deer and rabbits.
## Growing conditions
Plant in rich, well-drained soil and water consistently while the lupine establishes. In hot climates, afternoon shade and mulch can help keep roots cooler. Lupines are generally short-lived perennials, so leave a few seed heads if you want seedlings to renew the planting.
## Maintenance
Deadhead faded flower spikes to encourage an extended display. Check new growth and flower stems for aphids, and watch for slugs and snails in damp weather. Lupine seeds and plant parts can be harmful if eaten.
