About WESTCOUNTRY™ 'Gladiator' PP23075 Lupine

Gladiator is a Westcountry lupine with upright, vigorous growth and large orange-and-yellow bicolored flowers on dense spikes. The exact-cultivar profile reports a mature height of about 25–29 inches and a spread of 21–25 inches, with bloom from late spring into summer. ## Garden use The bright flower spikes bring warm color to sunny borders and work well in groups or as cut flowers. Its upright habit and green, palmately divided foliage give the plant structure before and after bloom. Lupines grow best in rich soil that drains well; the cultivar profile lists average-to-moist soil conditions. ## Growing conditions Choose a sunny position and allow room for the mature clump. The profile identifies the selection as a British Westcountry hybrid and notes that lupines are not especially long-lived, so a planting may need occasional renewal. In suitable climates, the genus is generally grown as a perennial; performance varies with winter temperatures and summer heat. ## Maintenance Cut back spent flower stems after blooming and inspect the foliage for aphids or powdery mildew. Slugs and snails can also damage young growth. Lupines can be harmful if eaten, so keep seeds and plant parts away from children and pets.
