About Splenriet Flaming Sword

‘Splenriet’ is a striped flaming-sword bromeliad with a rosette of broad green leaves marked by dark crossbands and a red flower bract carrying small yellow flowers. The species is an epiphyte from tropical forests, where it grows in humid, shaded conditions on trees or at their bases. This named selection makes a colorful indoor specimen in a warm room with bright filtered light. ## Growing Conditions The North Carolina Extension Gardener identifies the species as Lutheria splendens and lists Vriesea splendens among its former names. It recommends bright indirect light to partial shade, warmth and humidity, with a free-draining potting or orchid mix. Water the central cup and keep the mix moist but well drained, allowing its upper portion to dry somewhat between waterings. The species typically reaches 2–3 feet tall and 18–24 inches wide. ## Maintenance Remove offsets when they are large enough to handle if you want to propagate the plant; flowering rosettes decline after producing offsets. Watch for scale and mealybugs and avoid stagnant, soggy potting mix. See the [North Carolina Extension Gardener flaming-sword profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/lutheria-splendens/common-name/flaming-sword/) for species care and taxonomy.
