About Jerusalem cross

Jerusalem cross (Lychnis chalcedonica), also called Maltese cross, is an erect perennial with oval leaves and compact domed clusters of bright vermilion flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society lists summer flowering, a mature height of 0.5–1 m and a spread of 0.1–0.5 m. ## Garden Profile The [RHS species profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/10600/lychnis-chalcedonica/details) describes flower heads about 10–12 cm wide and recommends full sun or partial shade. It lists chalk, loam or sand soils and a range of soil pH, with well-drained conditions. ## Growing Conditions The broader [RHS Lychnis guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/lychnis) notes that L. chalcedonica prefers moister conditions and should not become too dry. Keep the root zone evenly moist while allowing excess water to drain; the RHS profile also lists this species for sheltered exposures. ## Maintenance Remove faded flower stems after the summer display and clear old growth as it dies back. In dry weather, water deeply enough to keep the soil from drying out, while avoiding prolonged waterlogging.
