Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) is a deciduous fruiting shrub with arching, sometimes thorny branches and small gray-green leaves. Purple flowers appear in late spring and summer, followed by red to orange-red berries. Only fully ripe fruit is edible; it can be eaten fresh, cooked, or dried. Plant in full sun for the best crop, in free-draining soil; light shade is tolerated, but waterlogged roots can cause problems. Water regularly while plants establish and during flowering and fruit set. Unpruned plants can reach about 12 feet tall and around 4 feet wide, while pruning can keep growth more manageable. Lycium barbarum is self-fruitful and does not need a pollination partner. ## Maintenance
In early spring, remove dead or poorly placed branches and shorten overlong stems. Control root suckers as they appear, and wear gloves when handling spiny growth.
