Amur maackia is a small deciduous tree with a rounded crown, low trunk, and stiff, interlacing branches. It bears fragrant white, pea-like flowers in late spring and develops flat seed pods in fall; its peeling amber-brown bark adds winter interest.
## Growing Conditions
North Carolina State Extension describes a cultivated tree about 30 feet tall and wide, hardy in USDA zones 3–8, and best in full sun to part shade. It prefers average moisture and loose, well-drained soil, tolerates heavy clay, and performs poorly in persistently wet or very dry sites. See the [NCSU Amur maackia profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/maackia-amurensis/) for its broader botanical and site notes.
## Maintenance
Prune for structure while the tree is young; large cuts on older branches heal slowly. Water during establishment and extended dry periods, and avoid routine heavy pruning once the crown is formed.
