About Macho™ Fern

Macho Fern is a large, mounding sword fern with glossy bright-green fronds that can reach four feet long. Grow it in bright indoor light or outdoors in shade to partial shade, with evenly moist but well-drained soil. [Proven Winners plant profile](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/nephrolepis/macho-fern-nephrolepis-biserrata) · [NC State Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/nephrolepis-biserrata/common-name/macho-fern/) ## Garden use This tropical fern makes a bold foliage feature in a large urn, patio container, or hanging basket. Its cascading mound can reach 36–48 inches tall and 36–60 inches wide, with individual fronds approaching four feet. In climates where it cannot remain outdoors year-round, grow it as a seasonal porch plant or bring it indoors for winter. ## Growing conditions Provide bright light indoors, or part shade to shade outdoors; protect outdoor plants from strong winds and afternoon sun. Keep the soil consistently moist but well drained, avoiding prolonged dryness and waterlogging. Proven Winners lists it for hardiness zones 9a–10b and says outdoor growing works when temperatures stay above 50°F. NC State Extension describes the species as tropical and recommends moist, well-drained soil. ## Foliage The glossy, bright-green fronds are the main ornamental feature. This selection is sold as an annual by Proven Winners, though it can be kept indoors as a houseplant. ## Maintenance Water regularly to maintain even moisture and check drainage. Inspect foliage for common indoor or greenhouse pests before bringing a plant indoors. Deadheading is unnecessary; remove damaged fronds as needed.
