About Yulan Magnolia Tree

Yulan magnolia is a large, deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown that typically reaches 30–40 feet tall and wide. In late winter or early spring, its fragrant, creamy-white flowers open on bare branches before the dark green leaves emerge; some blooms show a pink tint at the base. [N.C. State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/magnolia-denudata/) · [UF/IFAS Extension](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST378) ## Landscape Use Give this multi-stemmed magnolia room for both its mature crown and roots. It makes a strong lawn or large-garden specimen and can frame a patio, entrance, or walkway where its early flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed. Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained, organic-rich soil; a sheltered site helps protect early flowers and branches from harsh winds. ## Maintenance Plant where soil will not stay waterlogged or become very dry. Mulch the root area to help conserve even moisture, and avoid compacted ground. If pruning is needed to shape or strengthen the framework, do it just after flowering so the next season’s buds can develop.
