About Purple Blooming Magnolia

Magnolia 'Genie' is a compact, upright deciduous magnolia selected by Vance Hooper. Its deep plum-red flowers open on bare branches in spring and may repeat in summer when conditions are not too dry. [Plantipp's exact cultivar profile](https://plantipp.eu/uk/varieties/magnolia-geniepbr); [Canadian Food Inspection Agency variety description](https://active.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/pbrpov/cropreport/mag/app00008326e.shtml). ## Flowers and form The tulip-shaped flowers are dark purple-red outside and purple within, with the inner color shifting toward blue-pink as they age. The tree has dark green leaves and a tidy pyramidal outline, with layered branches developing over time. The breeder's product sheet reports a height of about 10 feet and a 5–6-foot spread; Plantipp gives approximately 3 m tall by 1.5 m wide after ten years. It is listed for USDA Zone 5, with no upper limit established in the consulted source. [PlantHaven grower sheet](https://media.planthaven.com/dev/docs/2019/04/Magnolia-Genie-PK.pdf). ## Siting Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. The cultivar is compact enough for small gardens and urban spaces, but leave room for its mature crown. Flowers are produced on bare stems before the foliage. ## Maintenance Only light pruning is normally needed. Water well through dry summer weather if you want to support possible repeat flowering; the timing and amount of a second display depend on local conditions. PlantHaven lists U.S. Plant Patent PP20748.
