About Gold Star Yellow Magnolia

Magnolia ‘Gold Star’ is a deciduous hybrid magnolia with a broad, upright tree form, creamy yellow star-shaped flowers, and bronze-red young leaves that mature to green. Its blossoms appear in spring before or with the new foliage, making it a distinctive specimen for a sheltered lawn or larger garden. ## Form and seasonal display The cultivar combines Magnolia acuminata ‘Miss Honeybee’ and M. stellata ‘Rubra’. Trees and Shrubs Online describes it as a small to medium tree, with flowers that can have up to 14 narrow, strap-shaped tepals; the pale yellow flowers fade toward cream. The University of Minnesota lists a broad-pyramidal form about 20–25 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide. Chicago Botanic Garden also describes its yellow, star-shaped flowers and specimen use. Published hardiness estimates vary: Trees and Shrubs Online gives USDA Zones 5–9, while the University of Minnesota lists Zones 4–8. ## Site and seasonal care Choose a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained soil. Magnolias benefit from consistent moisture and deep watering during dry spells; a mulch layer helps conserve soil moisture. Early flowers can be affected by late spring frosts, although this cultivar is reported to tolerate some frost. Its mature size suits an open lawn, woodland edge, or large mixed border where the branching form can develop. ## Maintenance Water deeply during establishment and extended dry periods, then maintain even soil moisture without waterlogging. Keep mulch away from the trunk. Avoid unnecessary pruning; if shaping is needed, prune after flowering and remove only damaged or crossing branches.
