About Judy Zuk Magnolia

Judy Zuk is a deciduous magnolia hybrid introduced by Brooklyn Botanic Garden in 2007, a complex cross of Magnolia acuminata, M. liliiflora, and M. stellata. This bushy, upright to columnar small tree or large shrub bears scented, tulip-shaped flowers in spring; the petals are yellow to orange outside, golden inside, with a purple blush at the base. It suits full sun or partial shade and a sheltered position. RHS lists it for cottage and informal gardens, city and courtyard gardens, and flower borders and beds. ## Maintenance Grow in moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil; clay, loam, or sand is suitable. Shelter the tree from cold winds, since late frost can damage flower buds. Little pruning is needed; if shaping is necessary, prune deciduous magnolias from midsummer to early autumn.
