Kobus magnolia is a deciduous tree or large shrub native to Japan and Korea. Its fragrant, cup-shaped white flowers, often pink-tinged, open on bare branches in late winter or early spring before the leaves appear.
## Placement
Plan for a broad crown about 25–30 feet tall and 25–35 feet wide. The young tree starts pyramidal and becomes spreading, rounded, or multi-stemmed with age; it works well as a spring-flowering specimen where there is room to mature.
## Growing conditions
Grow it in full sun or part shade in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. It tolerates cold and a range of soil types, but avoid ground that stays very wet or very dry. A protected position helps shield its early buds and brittle branches from wind.
## Maintenance
Flowering can be sparse while the tree is young and may take many years to become abundant. Avoid a hot southern exposure that can prompt buds to open too early; late frost may damage flowers. Water during establishment and dry spells.
