About Marillyn Pink - Purple Magnolia

Magnolia ‘Marillyn’ is a small tree or large shrub with purple-magenta flowers that open to white interiors. Brooklyn Botanic Garden records it as a 1989 introduction from Magnolia liliiflora ‘Nigra’ crossed with M. kobus; it honors Garden benefactor Marillyn Wilson. The cultivar is also encountered under the spelling “Marilyn.” ## Flowers and form The late-season flowers appear in spring, after many magnolias have begun flowering. The parentage and flower description are documented by [Brooklyn Botanic Garden](https://www.bbg.org/article/eight_magnolia_hybrids_bred_by_brooklyn_botanic_garden). This deciduous Magnolia can be grown as a specimen shrub or small tree. ## Site and soil Choose a site with room for the plant’s mature spread and protect flower buds from late frost where practical. Magnolia roots are best left undisturbed, so select the permanent site before planting. Water regularly while the root system establishes; maintain even soil moisture during dry weather. ## Maintenance Keep pruning light. Remove dead or damaged branches after flowering, and shape only as needed; avoid routine hard pruning.
