Vulden magnolia is a deciduous small tree selected in New Zealand for its large, early flowers, which open from rich red-purple buds to reveal pale interiors. Its trade name is Shirazz, and the flowers have a light fruity fragrance; see the [cultivar account at Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/magnolia/magnolia-cultivars-u-v/) and the [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/235041/magnolia-shirazz-vulden/details).
## Identification and flowering
The cultivar is Magnolia ‘Vulden’, also sold as SHIRAZZ™; it is a cross of M. denudata and M. ‘Vulcan’. The goblet-shaped flowers open early in spring, sometimes before the leaves, and can be damaged by a late frost. Its deciduous foliage is green through the growing season.
## Growing conditions
Choose a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. Vulden grows best in moist but well-drained soil; neutral to slightly acidic conditions are suitable. Allow room for a small tree or large shrub as it matures.
## Maintenance
Water regularly while the tree establishes, then water during prolonged dry spells so the root zone does not dry out. Mulch over the root area while keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Avoid heavy pruning; remove dead or damaged branches after flowering, and protect early flowers from frost where practical.
