About Ann Magnolia Tree

Magnolia ‘Ann’ is an upright, deciduous member of the Little Girl magnolias introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum. Its tapered buds open to upright red-purple flowers with paler inner surfaces in mid-spring, as glossy green leaves emerge. The flowers may be affected by a late freeze, so choose a sheltered site. [The RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/81963/magnolia-ann/details), [Morton Arboretum’s cultivar guide](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/magnolia/), and [The Dawes Arboretum’s profile](https://dawesarb.arboretumexplorer.org/taxon-24218.aspx) describe the named selection and its garden qualities. ## Landscape Use Grow it as a specimen shrub or small tree where its spring flowers can be seen. Mature size varies among references, so allow room for a broad, upright crown and avoid crowding it against buildings or paths. It suits a smaller landscape better than the larger magnolia species. ## Maintenance Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; humus-rich, acidic to neutral ground is suitable. Shelter the site from cold winds and mulch around the shallow roots to help moderate soil moisture and temperature. Little pruning is needed. If shaping is necessary, prune deciduous magnolias from midsummer to early autumn.
