About Woodsman Yellow Magnolia

‘Woodsman’ is a deciduous magnolia hybrid grown as a spring-flowering small tree. The flowers show several colors across the tepals: the outside is dusky lilac-pink brushed with green, while the interior is creamy white with pink veins. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/385719/magnolia-woodsman/details) gives an eventual height of 8–12 m and spread of 4–8 m, so allow room for a broad mature crown. ## Flowers and placement Plant it as a specimen where its early-season flowers can be seen against a simple backdrop. Full sun or partial shade suits it; a sheltered position helps protect flower buds from late frost. Moist, well-drained soil with a neutral-to-acid reaction is preferred. Magnolia roots are easily disturbed, so choose the permanent site before planting and avoid repeated cultivation beneath the canopy. ## Maintenance Keep soil evenly moist while the tree establishes, then water during prolonged dry weather. Pruning is usually minimal; remove dead or damaged growth and make any necessary shaping cuts after flowering, during the recommended summer pruning window. Avoid heavy renovation cuts, which can spoil the natural branching form.
