Create design onlineAbout Jane Magnolia Tree
‘Jane’ is a compact deciduous magnolia in the Little Girl series, grown as a large shrub or small tree. Its fragrant, tulip-shaped flowers have purple-red exteriors and white centers, opening before the leaves in spring; occasional mid-summer rebloom is possible. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/magnolia-jane/common-name/jane-magnolia/) describes the series’ later flowering as less exposed to frost than earlier magnolias.
## Form and growing conditions
‘Jane’ was selected from a cross of *Magnolia liliiflora* ‘Reflorescens’ and *M. stellata* ‘Waterlily’ by Francis DeVos and William Kosar at the U.S. National Arboretum. It typically reaches about 15 feet high and 12 feet wide; this record’s broader height and width ranges reflect normal variation among mature plants. Full sun or partial shade works well. Give it rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil; it tolerates heavy clay but performs best where drainage is reliable. Use it as a flowering specimen or an informal screen. For cultivar history, see [Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/magnolia/magnolia-cultivars-j/).
## Maintenance
Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture, and water regularly while it establishes. Its fleshy roots are easily damaged, so choose the planting site carefully and avoid moving an established plant. Prune only to remove damaged branches or maintain shape, and do so after flowering.
