About Black Tulip™ Saucer Magnolia

Black Tulip is a Mark Jury hybrid magnolia selected for large, dark red flowers with heavy-textured petals. Its cup-shaped blooms can reach about 15 cm across and stand out against bare branches in midseason; young trees may not show the mature flower color or size consistently. [Tikorangi The Jury Garden’s Black Tulip profile](https://jury.co.nz/jury-plants/jury-magnolias/) describes a compact Mark Jury selection whose flowers are more wind tolerant than loose-petaled types, and gives the tree a height of 3.5 m. ## Placement Use it as a close-view specimen where the unusually dark flowers can be appreciated. Allow room for a small tree, and provide sun with moist, well-drained soil suited to saucer magnolias. At about 11½ feet tall, it makes a distinctive close-view specimen; ask a local magnolia grower about winter suitability in colder regions. ## Seasonal interest Black Tulip flowers in the magnolia midseason, before or as foliage develops. The blooms are the main feature; protect early flowers from severe frost, which can mark magnolia petals. ## Maintenance Water regularly while the tree establishes and during prolonged dry spells. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Prune sparingly after flowering to remove damaged or poorly placed branches, preserving the tree’s natural form.
