Magnolia 'Susan' is a Little Girl hybrid raised at the U.S. National Arboretum, with early deep red-purple flowers that are paler inside. Its parentage is M. liliiflora 'Nigra' × M. stellata 'Rosea'; read the [cultivar account at Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/magnolia/magnolia-cultivars-s/) or the [LSU AgCenter trial profile](https://app.lsuagcenter.com/hammondtrials/VarietyTrial/Details/837).
## Flowers and form
The flowers open before the leaves and can reach about 15 cm across. The tepals may twist or roll inward, giving the buds and open flowers a distinctive shape. This deciduous magnolia usually grows as a medium to large shrub, and can form a small tree.
## Growing conditions
Plant it in a sheltered position with sun or light shade. Magnolias generally prefer moist, well-drained soil; neutral to slightly acidic conditions suit this group. Late frost can damage early flowers, so avoid exposed frost pockets where possible.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and during extended dry periods. Mulch over the root zone, keeping material away from the stems. Pruning is seldom needed; remove dead or damaged branches. If shaping is necessary, prune in mid-summer to early autumn, as late-winter or early-spring cuts can bleed sap. See the [RHS magnolia growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/magnolia/growing-guide) for general siting and pruning guidance.
