Brandywine® is a rounded flowering crabapple with deep rose-pink double blossoms and small yellow-green fruit. Its green foliage has a burgundy overlay, giving the tree color beyond its spring flowers.
## Flowers, foliage, and fruit
Lake County Nursery’s [Brandywine® fact sheet](https://www.lakecountynursery.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Malus-%E2%80%98Branzam%E2%80%99-Brandywine%C2%AE.pdf) identifies the cultivar as Malus ‘Branzam’ and gives a mature height and spread of 15–20 feet. It describes fragrant, deep rose-pink double flowers and yellow-green fruit about three-quarters to one inch across. The source lists the selection for Zone 4; that is its stated minimum, not a full hardiness range.
## Site
Choose a sunny spot for strong flowering. Crabapples tolerate a range of soils and prefer a slightly acidic pH; good drainage and room for the mature rounded crown help the tree settle into a landscape. Use Brandywine® as a specimen or flowering accent. [UMass Extension’s crabapple guidance](https://www.umass.edu/agriculture-food-environment/landscape/fact-sheets/crabapples) discusses full sun, soil preferences, specimen use, and general pruning needs.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry spells. Remove suckers and damaged or crossing branches when needed, keeping pruning modest so the rounded form and spring flowering remain attractive.
