Cortland is a New York apple selection valued for its bright red skin, juicy white flesh, and slow browning after cutting. Its fresh-cut appearance makes it a useful choice for fruit plates and salads as well as home snacking.
## Fruit and use
Cornell identifies Cortland as one of the varieties developed through its apple-breeding program and notes its high yields and cold tolerance in New York. The fruit may show yellow or green highlights beneath the red skin. Its pale flesh is especially useful for fresh preparations where slices are served soon after cutting; it can also be used in cooking.
## Maintenance
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and allow space for the selected rootstock. Apples usually need a compatible pollenizer with overlapping bloom for reliable crops. Water regularly while young, then during dry spells and fruit development. Prune during dormancy to maintain an open, strong framework.
