About Golden Delicious Apple Tree

Golden Delicious is a heavily producing dessert apple with pale green to golden-yellow fruit, crisp sweet flesh, and a spring display of pink buds opening to white flowers. In North Carolina, its fruit ripens around mid-September; harvest, color, and tree size vary with climate and rootstock. ## Fruit and pollination The apples are useful fresh or cooked, including for baking and sauce. A tree can set fruit on its own, but a nearby apple with overlapping bloom can improve production. Dave Wilson Nursery lists Yellow Delicious as another name for Golden Delicious; the two records refer to the same selection. ## Site and season Plant in full sun with good air movement and well-drained soil. NC State gives an 8–15-foot range for dwarf and semi-dwarf trees; rootstock and training affect the eventual size. The cultivar is mid-season and its fruit can bruise or shrivel, so handle and store it carefully. Prune during dormancy to maintain a balanced canopy, and monitor for apple scab, powdery mildew, canker, and other locally common orchard problems.
