About Golden Sentinel™ Apple Tree

Golden Sentinel is a columnar dessert apple bred by David W. Lane at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Summerland research centre. Its yellow fruit has no red overcolor, and the tree’s narrow habit distinguishes it from ordinary spreading apple forms. ## Selection and fruit The Canadian cultivar record traces Golden Sentinel to a 1986 cross of Discovery and 8C-17-36. It describes weak to intermediate vigor, a columnar habit, fruit borne on spurs, and mid- to late-season maturity. The fruit is medium-sized, yellow, and white to greenish inside; the tree cropped annually in the recorded trials. Trial timing in British Columbia may differ in other climates. ## Site and pollination Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil and room for the selected rootstock. Most apple cultivars produce better when a compatible pollinizer blooms nearby; confirm a local partner with overlapping bloom before planting. Columnar growth can fit a narrow planting, while actual size still depends on rootstock and care. Thin heavy fruit set when needed to support fruit size and reduce limb strain. Check regional apple guidance for common pests and diseases.
