Create design onlineAbout Jonathan Apple Tree
Jonathan is an old American dessert apple with a crisp, juicy texture and a balanced sweet-tart flavor. Its green-yellow skin develops a deep crimson flush, and the fruit is useful fresh, in baking, and for freezing.
## Fruit and season
[Washington State University’s Jonathan profile](https://treefruit.wsu.edu/variety/jonathan/) describes its New York origin, sweet-tart flavor, crimson-flushed fruit, early harvest, and storage potential. Utah State University Extension lists Jonathan as a mid-season bloomer with ripening from mid-September to mid-October along the Wasatch Front. Regional harvest calendars differ, so judge maturity for your own climate and tree.
## Site and pollination
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Jonathan needs pollen from a different apple variety whose bloom overlaps; two Jonathan trees will not pollinate each other. Choose a compatible partner for local bloom timing. Utah State University Extension explains cross-pollination and the strong effect of rootstock on mature tree size. It also identifies Jonathan as susceptible to fire blight, especially relevant in areas with warm, wet spring weather.
## Maintenance
Water consistently while the tree establishes and during dry spells, but improve drainage where water stands. Prune and train to the tree’s rootstock and intended form. Thin crowded fruit clusters after bloom when needed, and follow local extension guidance for fire-blight monitoring, pest management, harvest maturity, and storage.
