About Mutsu (Crispin) Apple Tree

Mutsu, also called Crispin, is a large, crisp, juicy apple with a sweet flavor. It is useful fresh, in salads, and for baking and cooking, and the fruit stores for several months. ## Fruit and pollination [North Carolina State Extension’s Mutsu profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/malus-domestica-mutsu/) identifies it as a Golden Delicious × Indo cultivar from Japan and describes its late-season harvest and triploid pollination biology. Mutsu produces poor, ineffective pollen, so it should not be relied on to pollinate another apple. For a reliable crop, plant it near compatible pollinizer varieties with overlapping bloom; the extension profile lists Golden Delicious, Jonathan, and Red Rome as candidates. Utah State University Extension lists Mutsu as USDA zones 5–9 and late-October to early-November ripening along the Wasatch Front. ## Site and maintenance Choose full sun, moving air through the canopy, and well-drained soil. Apple size depends heavily on rootstock and pruning, so the final height and spread vary with the grafted tree. Water consistently during establishment and dry weather. Prune and train according to rootstock and form, then thin crowded fruit clusters after bloom as needed. Follow local extension guidance for site-specific pollination, disease, harvest, and storage practices.
