Create design onlineAbout North Pole Apple Tree
North Pole is a narrow, columnar apple tree that produces white spring blossoms and large, red-skinned apples with crisp, juicy, McIntosh-like flesh. Its upright form brings edible fruit to a small garden, patio, or container.
## Fruit and garden use
The fruit ripens in late summer to early fall and can be eaten fresh, pressed for cider, or used for baking. The tree reaches about 10 feet tall and stays much narrower than a typical apple tree, making it suitable for a narrow bed or large container. Branches can be topped to control height. The [Dave Wilson Nursery Northpole profile](https://www.davewilson.com/nurseries/products/fruit-trees/apple/northpole/) gives a September maturity date, USDA Zones 4–8, estimated height, and pollination recommendation. [One Green World’s Northpole plant page](https://onegreenworld.com/product/northpole-columnar-apple-tree/) describes its spring flowers, fruit quality, container use, growing conditions, and rootstock.
## Growing conditions
Plant in sun and well-drained soil. Apples need pollen from another compatible variety flowering at the same time; Dave Wilson Nursery recommends Scarlet Sentinel or another apple variety. One Green World lists an M.7 rootstock and notes that apples benefit from a nearby pollinizer. The plant is deciduous, so its spring flowers and fall fruit provide seasonal interest while the tree rests in winter.
## Maintenance
Water well while the tree establishes, then during prolonged dry periods and fruit development. Prune annually to preserve the central column and manage upright side branches; avoid removing too much fruiting wood. Thin clusters after fruit set when the crop is heavy, and collect fallen fruit to keep nearby paving tidy.
