Create design onlineAbout Scarlet Sentinel Apple Tree
Scarlet Sentinel is a compact, columnar apple tree with pale pink to white spring flowers and red-blushed, greenish-yellow apples. The crisp, juicy fruit ripens in September and is suited to fresh eating.
## Fruit and garden use
Its narrow upright form fits a small orchard, courtyard, or other limited space. The tree reaches about 10 feet tall, and the fruit is harvested around mid-September. Apples need pollen from a compatible variety that blooms at the same time; the [Dave Wilson Nursery Scarlet Sentinel profile](https://www.davewilson.com/nurseries/products/fruit-trees/apple/scarlet_sentinel/) recommends Northpole or another apple variety. The [Antheia Gardens plant profile](https://www.antheiagardens.ca/plant-name/Apple-Scarlet-Sentinel) describes the spring bloom, fruit, full-sun exposure, and well-drained soil.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Allow enough room for pollination and select a second apple or flowering crabapple with overlapping spring bloom. Rootstock and pruning affect the mature size of an apple tree, so a dwarfing rootstock can help maintain a compact footprint.
## Maintenance
Water consistently while the tree establishes and during prolonged dry periods. Prune in late winter to retain the narrow central leader and remove crowded or damaged branches; avoid removing productive spurs. Thin fruit when the crop is heavy, and pick apples as they ripen in September. Clear fallen fruit to reduce pests and keep the planting area tidy.
