Prairie Rose is a Malus ioensis crabapple with fragrant, deep-pink double flowers and green foliage. This upright selection is usually fruitless, making its spring bloom the main ornamental display. It grows to about 6 m tall, with a reported spread near 5.5 m. [J. Frank Schmidt’s Prairie Rose profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/trees/prairie-rose-crabapple/) describes its flowers, form, and fruiting, while [Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/malus/malus-cultivars-n-q/) records its cultivar history and characteristics.
## Site and care
Grow in full sun for the best flowering, in well-drained soil. Water deeply during dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing. Leave enough room for the mature crown and maintain good air circulation.
## Maintenance
Prune in late winter to remove damaged, crossing, or crowded branches and maintain a strong framework. Avoid unnecessary heavy pruning, and clear fallen leaves during seasonal cleanup. Crabapples can be susceptible to disease, so monitor foliage and follow locally appropriate care guidance.
