Red Jewel® ('Jewelcole') is an upright, pyramidal flowering crabapple with white spring blossoms and bright red fruit that can remain on the tree into spring in mild-winter regions. Its dark green foliage frames the flowers and persistent fruit, and the tree grows to about 15 ft tall by 12 ft wide. Cole Nursery in Ohio raised this cultivar; the [exact J. Frank Schmidt plant profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/trees/red-jewel-crabapple/) records its size and disease-resistance ratings, while the [Chicago Botanic Garden profile](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/malus-jewelcole-crabapple) describes its flowers and fruit display.
## Site and care
Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Allow room for the pyramidal crown and good air movement around the branches. Water regularly while the tree is establishing, then during extended dry periods.
## Maintenance
Prune modestly during dormancy to remove dead, damaged, crossing, or crowded branches and water sprouts. The cultivar has good resistance to apple scab, but fire-blight resistance is only fair; inspect new growth and remove infected material promptly. Clear fallen leaves and fruit during seasonal cleanup.
