Create design onlineAbout Ivory Spear® Columnar Flowering Crabapple
Ivory Spear® is a densely columnar flowering crabapple with deep pink buds that open to white flowers. Its dark green foliage stays clean through the growing season, and bright red fruit persists into late autumn.
## Form and seasonal interest
The narrow, upright crown reaches about 18 feet tall and 7 feet wide, creating a vertical accent where space is limited. The [J. Frank Schmidt Ivory Spear profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/introductions/ivory-spear-crabapple/) lists the cultivar’s size, hardiness, flower and fruit display, and disease resistance. Its red fruit contrasts with dark green leaves, with a touch of yellow fall color late in the season.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun so the crown develops evenly and produces abundant flowers and fruit. This selection is listed for USDA Zone 4. Leave space for the narrow crown and avoid crowding it with trees that shade the foliage.
## Maintenance
Water regularly while the tree establishes and during extended dry spells. Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain the tight columnar outline. The fruit persists into autumn, so collect fallen fruit where the tree overhangs walks or patios.
