About Leprechaun Flowering Crabapple

Leprechaun is an upright, spreading flowering crabapple with pink blossoms that fade toward white, green leaves, and small red fruit. Spring flowers give way to fruit that may remain into winter, while the foliage adds gold color in fall. ## Seasonal display At about 6–8 feet tall and wide, this compact ornamental tree can fit smaller yards and mixed borders. Give its crown an open, sunny position; Utah State University notes that crabapples do not tolerate shade well. Crabapple cultivars vary widely in flower and fruit color, so Leprechaun’s pink-to-white bloom and red fruit create its defining seasonal combination. The small fruit can be gathered for preserves or left for its winter display; consider cleanup where fruit drops over paths or patios. [Cornell’s accession record](https://ecommons.cornell.edu/entities/publication/abe44a0a-50a1-475a-be20-b0976bde46f0) documents this cultivar in its flowering-tree collection. ## Maintenance Prune only as needed to maintain its structure. For flowering crabapples, [University of Minnesota Extension recommends late-winter pruning](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/pruning-trees-and-shrubs); pruning in spring or summer can increase fire-blight risk.
