Purple Prince is a rounded flowering crabapple whose strong upright branches spread into a broad canopy. Rose-red flowers open early in spring, followed by purple leaves that deepen in color and mature to bronze-green; small maroon fruits persist into winter and feed birds. The [J. Frank Schmidt plant profile](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/introductions/purple-prince-crabapple/) lists a mature height and spread of 20 feet and hardiness to USDA Zone 4, and notes strong disease ratings for scab, cedar-apple rust, fireblight, and mildew.
## Landscape use
Use this ornamental tree as a specimen or in a grouping where spring bloom, seasonal foliage, and winter fruit can be seen. Virginia Tech’s [flowering crabapple guide](https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/content/pubs_ext_vt_edu/en/3010/3010-1483/3010-1483.html) recommends full sun and well-drained soil for crabapples; established plants tolerate some drought and urban conditions.
## Maintenance
Remove suckers and prune only as needed to correct crossing branches or water sprouts. Prune soon after flowering ends, before next spring’s flower buds form. Fruit may need cleanup if the tree is planted beside pavement.
