About Red Peacock Flowering Crabapple

Red Peacock is an ornamental crabapple with coral-pink buds that open into soft pink and white ruffled flowers. Its mint-green foliage, red fruit, and branches that become semi-weeping with age extend its interest beyond the spring bloom. ## Form and seasonal interest The plant patent describes the original cross as Molton Lava × (Luwick × Malus zumi #243), made in 1969 by John L. Fiala; it was assigned to Chas. Klehm & Son. The patent records a young upright form that becomes semi-pendulous and notes abundant fruit that can persist into early winter. Garden size varies with site and training; University of Minnesota lists flowering crabapples as adaptable landscape trees with cultivar-dependent form and disease performance. ## Site Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, allowing room for a broadening crown. Persistent fruit may be eaten by birds. Clear fallen fruit when it accumulates near walks, patios, or driveways, and monitor foliage for common crabapple diseases.
