Golden Raindrops® Flowering Crabapple

Golden Raindrops® is a flowering crabapple with deeply cut green leaves and an upright, vase-shaped form. White flowers are followed by very small golden-yellow fruit, creating a delicate display on the spreading branches. ## Size and Form J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. lists this cultivar at 19 feet tall and 15 feet wide, with USDA hardiness zone 3. The tree combines upright branches with slender limbs that spread horizontally, giving it an elegant outline. Its fine-textured foliage has a distinctive cut-leaf appearance. ## Flowers and Fruit White flowers precede the tiny golden-yellow fruit. JFS describes the fruit as about one-quarter inch across. This selection is valued for its unusual foliage and fruit display, rather than for large fruit. ## Maintenance JFS rates Golden Raindrops’ resistance to apple scab, cedar-apple rust, and powdery mildew as excellent, but rates fire blight resistance as poor. Monitor for fire blight during the growing season and prune as needed to maintain the tree’s form and clearance.
