Create design onlineAbout Sugar Tyme Flowering Crabapple
Sugar Tyme® crabapple has an upright-to-oval crown, fragrant white spring flowers opening from pink buds, and persistent bright red fruit. Lake County Nursery identifies the selection as Malus ‘Sutyzam’ and lists an 18-foot height, 15-foot spread, and Zone 4 hardiness in its [plant fact sheet](https://www.lakecountynursery.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Malus-%E2%80%98Sutyzam%E2%80%99-Sugar-Tyme%C2%AE.pdf).
## Placement
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Established flowering crabapples can tolerate some drought stress; use this upright, small-tree form as a specimen or in a mixed border, leaving room for fruit to fall if it is near paving. See [Virginia Tech’s flowering crabapple guide](https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/content/pubs_ext_vt_edu/en/3010/3010-1483/3010-1483.html).
## Maintenance
Remove shoots that grow below the graft and prune only as needed soon after flowering, before the next spring’s flower buds form. Keep an eye on local disease pressure, since performance varies among crabapple cultivars.
