About Alphonso Mango

Alphonso is a named selection of the evergreen mango, grown for its edible fruit in warm tropical and subtropical climates. Mango trees develop rounded canopies, though vigor varies among varieties; many become large if left unpruned. The University of Florida recommends a sunny, warm site that drains well and does not flood; the [RHS Alphonso listing](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/357367/mangifera-indica-alphonso/details) identifies the named selection. ## Growing Give the tree plenty of space from buildings, power lines, and other trees. Full sun supports growth and fruit production. In areas with a high water table or occasional flooding, planting on a mound can improve drainage. Water regularly while establishing the tree; mature mangoes generally need irrigation only during severe drought. ## Maintenance Train young branches to build a strong framework, then prune selectively to manage the canopy. Severe pruning may reduce fruit production for several seasons. Mango trees are sensitive to freezing temperatures and do not acclimate to cold; choose a warm location and protect young trees when cold threatens. Cool weather during bloom can also reduce fruit set.
