Create design onlineAbout Big Leaf Palm
Big-leaf palm is a striking solitary palm whose huge, undivided fronds rise in a shuttlecock-shaped crown. Native to Madagascar riverine rainforest, it is suited to warm, humid conservatories and tropical gardens.
## Form and setting
Mature plants may reach 6–15 metres tall, with a crown approaching 8 metres across and fronds several metres long. Its slow growth and scale call for generous overhead and lateral space; it is not suited to most temperate outdoor gardens.
## Growing conditions
The Singapore National Parks Board describes it as a semi-shade palm from a subtropical monsoonal climate, associated with acidic, organic-rich soils and abundant moisture. Provide filtered light, consistently moist but aerated soil, high humidity, and shelter from strong winds. Large ornamental leaves and a solitary habit are its defining features. See the [NParks species profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/3/4/3475).
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone evenly moist without stagnant water, and protect the crown from drying winds. Allow room for mature fronds rather than pruning healthy leaves; remove only dead or damaged foliage with clean tools.
