About Creeping Mazus

Creeping mazus is a low, spreading perennial groundcover with green foliage and small purple-lavender flowers in late spring and early summer. It knits into a soft mat for rock gardens, moist planting areas, and the gaps between stepping stones, where its fine scale works well along paths and around larger plants. ## Form and placement The plant stays close to the ground, with surface stems that root where they touch soil. Use it as a living carpet in bright sites with some shade during the hottest part of the day. It can handle light foot traffic, but it is not a durable substitute for a heavily used lawn. Its flowers have yellow and white markings; foliage may remain semi-evergreen in sheltered or mild conditions. ## Growing conditions Give creeping mazus consistent moisture and soil that drains well, while recognizing that it also tolerates occasionally wet ground. It grows in sun or partial shade and is listed for USDA Zones 5–8. Extension profiles place it at roughly 2–3 inches tall; the Royal Horticultural Society gives a broader mature range for height and spread. The catalog name Mazus reptans is retained. North Carolina State Extension notes Mazus reptans as a name previously used for M. miquelii, while the RHS continues to profile M. reptans. No regular pruning is needed; trim edges or lift unwanted rooted runners if the mat moves beyond its allotted space.
