Create design onlineAbout Magic Carpet™ Yellow Mecardonia
Magic Carpet™ Yellow is an annual Mecardonia with a low, semi-mounding form and a carpet of bright yellow flowers. Sakata lists it at 4–6 inches tall and 16–24 inches wide; an Arkansas extension profile describes the selection flowering from early spring into mid-October.
## Garden Use
The semi-upright shape suits bedding, path edges, and mixed containers or hanging baskets. Its broad spread and short stature make it useful where a low flowering plant can cover the soil between taller companions. Sakata describes it as durable along paths and between pavers, and the bright flowers continue through summer.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun or light shade. The breeder describes the cultivar as both heat and frost tolerant, but does not give a USDA hardiness zone. It is sold as an annual. The exact selection is patented as SAKMEC002 under U.S. plant patent 24,515, issued in 2014. ## Maintenance
The flowers are sterile, so deadheading is unnecessary. Sakata recommends periodic hard pruning to prolong flowering and maintain a neat form. Its culture guide notes that foliage can darken during midsummer heat and that pruning can prompt renewed growth. Keep the root zone from drying excessively, since flowering may decline when the plant becomes too dry.
